Apps For Emergencies

Let's face it the crime rate in Ireland is rising, although the statistics suggest it's dropping we've all seen crime and perhaps even experienced it first hand, I know I have!

Recently I needed to phone my local Garda Station in a rather huge hurry. This was fine as I knew the number off hand, but I thought to myself, how many people actually know where the nearest emergency service to them is and do they know the number. Or what if I wasn't at home that night and no-one knew the number? Would they have to waste time ringing directory enquiries, would they just ring 999? What if I was in a strange town and I needed a Garda Station or Hospital in a hurry? All these scenarios got me thinking of how I could make something to help if these situations arose.

So I did what I know best, I turned to my trusty iPhone to see if I could find as they saying goes, 'an app for that'. What I found was an app for doctors in Ireland, but nothing for emergency services such as GardaĆ or Hospitals. So I said to myself, "I'll make one!"

I spent a month designing and coding until I came up with something I was happy with. What I came up with was a few apps to help, Hospitals of Ireland, Gardai of Ireland and Doctors of Ireland. All these apps allow the user to find a service in any county of Ireland, call that service from the app and even view their nearest emergency service.

Hospitals of Ireland Nearby Hopsitals

Gardai of Ireland Station Details

Doctors of Ireland County List

Personally I'm gonna have these on my iPhone from now on and I'll be constantly updating them incase I'm ever in a situation where I need the Gardai or other Emergency Services again.

All these apps are up on the app store(iTunes link), why not have a look, they could help you out in a sticky situation.

Snow Cat

Recently(durin the snow) I decided I'd have a play with a Nikon D90. Here's one of took of the cat who looks terribly annoyed at the intrusion. Hopefully it's the first of many days out with the camera.

Finally after 2 months of coding and several weeks hounding my dedicated beta testers my new app "Dublin Bus Maps" has been submitted to the app store for review. Finger's crossed I'll have a painless review process.

Will let ya's all know if/when it's approved.

Till then.

First Post

I thought it was about time I set up my own website(www.philipkirwan.ie) aswell as my own blog. Tonight's job was the blog, the website can wait till tomorrow. Blogger make the whole process very easy and I was up and running in about half an hour, and that included my twitter feeds and the custom android application thingy.

So here we are, my first post and the start of a new obsession I'm sure. For any body with an android phone check out my apps in the market. "Yo Momma" and "Farty Farty", both written in about ten minutes each, so nothing spectacular.

At the moment, my friend John(sciritai) and I have a huge project underway and will be finished soon. I'll post updates here as we progress.

So that wraps it up for now. I'll be back soon.
